Update: Drew Hixon earns Master's degree
Can't remember the score of the first USF football game I covered for the Times back in 2004, but there's one play that's hard to forget -- the clean but devastating midfield hit from the Bulls' Mike Jenkins and Javan Camon that put Tennessee Tech receiver Drew Hixon in a coma for nearly a month.
We've written a lot about Hixon's amazing recovery over the years -- Gary Shelton wrote about him when he was still in a coma, and Joanne Korth went to his Virginia home to write about his progress four months after his injury. The Washington Post chronicled his recovery in 2006.
There's more great news on Hixon, as this past weekend he earned a Master's degree in instructional leadership from Tennessee Tech, helping him toward a career in athletic administration. Here's the story from TTU's sports information department.
So much can happen in six years -- that was the first college game for Jenkins, now entering his third season with the NFL's Dallas Cowboys, and Camon died tragically at age 25 after another violent collision in an indoor football game in Daytona Beach in 2007.
