For USF, a chance to join the state's elite

Times writer Brian Landman has written the main preview story for Saturday's USF-FSU game in Tallahassee, now just 24 hours away. He writes about the opportunity the game affords the Bulls, the chance to move up in the state's hierarchy and the risks FSU has in losing such a game. You can also read our "Scouting Report" game capsule for what to watch for ...

I'll go back to summer 2008, when Bobby Bowden was in Tampa to speak to the state's college football writers and first acknowledged the possibility of USF and FSU playing.

"You usually try to find somebody that you've got a chance to win, instead of getting your nose bloodied," Bowden said of his strategy in filling the schedule.

-- One more note: no big surprise, but cornerback Quenton Washington and receiver Jessie Hester did travel with the team after sitting out last week's game. Washington should be fine -- not as sure how much Hester will be able to play, but it's a chance for him to play in the stadium where his father Jessie Sr. made a name for himself as an FSU receiver 25 years ago.

I'll be hitting the road soon -- for those of you not on the road, it's a good time to jump in the comments and make a prediction one way or the other ...

And a reminder we'll be live-blogging throughout the game Saturday.
