USF falls to No. 23 BYU in double OT
I'm in South Florida, where USF football faces Miami at noon on Saturday, but we'll have a story soon from South Padre Island, Texas, where the Bulls' men's basketball team nearly upset No. 23 BYU, falling 77-75 in double overtime.
The Bulls (3-3) nearly handed BYU (5-0) its first loss, falling short on a buzzer-beater by Noah Hartsock with less than a second left in the second overtime. USF got a game-high 14 points from forward Augustus Gilchrist, and two huge 3-pointers from guard Jawanza Poland, who hit one for the lead with 46 seconds left in regulation and another to tie the game with 30 seconds left in the first overtime.
Here's our story from our correspondent covering the tournament, and you can see the box score as part of the writeup on USF's official site. How about Mike Burwell playing 44 minutes? Or Ron Anderson starting again and getting 13 rebounds, with Toarlyn Fitzpatrick getting a double-double off the bench in 18 minutes?
Also, USF's women's basketball team got an easy 59-38 win against UAB in Birmingham -- Andrea Smith led the Bulls with 11 points, while KaNeisha Saunders had 10 with five assists as the Bulls forced 24 turnovers. They play Samford on Saturday.
