USF football announces six new walk-ons
They've been at practice since fall classes started a few weeks back, but USF officially released the names of six new walk-ons, filling out Skip Holtz's 115-man roster and perhaps finding a way to get on the field at some point.
USF has a solid history of walk-ons becoming contributors -- Holtz put four on scholarship this fall in safety Ernie Tabuteau, kicker Marvin Kloss and fullbacks Chris Breit and Spencer Cavalieri, joining former walk-ons like quarterback Bobby Eveld and receiver Stephen Bravo-Brown. Here are the new six, with what bare info we could find online. ...
-- Tommie Hankerson, DB, 5-9, 202, Fort Lauderdale Boyd Anderson HS/Dean College: Was on the spring roster and didn't initially make the fall cut; played at the same small Massachusetts school as Bulls linebacker Curtis Weatherspooon, who was at USF in 2010-11. Youtube highlights here.
-- Alex Salvato, LS, 5-11, 149, Lakeland Victory Christian Academy: Salvato was at one point on the fall roster but didn't make the initial 105-man roster; USF only has one full-time long-snapper on roster in redshirt freshman David Burdetsky, so it's reasonable to think he could compete for the job in 2013, presuming he can put on some weight.
-- James Walker-Brown, OL, 6-4, 326, Kissimmee Osceola/Langston University: Found a fair amount on him -- played basketball in high school as a center, so fairly athletic. Here's a story from when he signed with Langston, and here's one quoting him from his college days in Oklahoma.
-- Grant White, RB, 5-11, 243, Watertown (N.Y.) South Jefferson HS/Jefferson CC: From the Syracuse area -- shows up most often as a standout wrestler, though a football references pop up. Breit and Cavalieri are seniors (as is Jeff Hawkins), so should have a chance to compete for a roster spot next year.
-- Jimel Atkins, WR, 6-3, 217, Ponte Vedra Beach HS/Central Connecticut State: Didn't show up on CCSU's 2011 roster, but he'll have three years after this year. This stat page shows him with modest numbers -- 8 catches for 117 yards and a touchdown -- seven games into his senior year.
-- Brandon Harris, LB, 5-11, 217, Jacksonville Wolfson HS: Not too much to be found from his high school days. Youtube highlights here.
