USF football news, from NFL exits to new QB

9

January

In the last 48 hours, USF's 2008 season has gotten appreciably easier, with news that Central Florida's Kevin Smith and Rutgers' Ray Rice were skipping their senior seasons to enter the NFL Draft, reportedly along with key defensive teammates for both schools. Add in Rutgers safety Courtney Greene, reportedly joining Rice in leaving early, and it's another big hit for the Knights, who likely will drop below USF (if they weren't already there) in most preseason Big East picks. Joining Smith from UCF is defensive back Joe Burnett, making the Knights less of a threat to upset the Bulls in the series' final scheduled game, in Orlando. Even Kansas, a key nonconference game in Tampa, has lost all-world corner Aqib Talib and tackle Anthony Collins. Little things that could help the Bulls in '08 ...

As the blog of record for all walk-on news, I can announce that USF has a new quarterback joining the program this week: Adam Shaw, a 6-foot-4 freshman from Sarasota Riverview who signed with Division I-AA Richmond but is transferring closer to home after one semester. Riverview coach John Sprague, who coached Bulls stars Amarri Jackson and Mike Ford, said Shaw has "an absolute cannon for an arm," and he led the Rams to the state playoffs as a senior in 2006. Read this story from the Sarasota Herald-Tribune, and it sounds like someone Bulls fans will want to pull for in the years ahead. He's expected to be the No. 4 quarterback this spring, though he could have competition for that post by fall. ...

And if you saw USF's last two basketball games, either in person or on TV, you probably noticed the fleur-de-lis shaved into the left side of center Kentrell Gransberry's head, a nice nod to his native Louisiana. Point guard Chris Howard tells us how most of the team takes a trip to the barber shop together before games, a bonding experience that's not quite the Mohawks of football's heyday last fall, but has helped bring the Bulls closer together. I'll be curious to see any new designs when the Bulls play host to No. 18 Pittsburgh on Wednesday night ... Oh, and for you jersey junkies, Georgia transfer Mike Mercer is wearing No. 2 in practice for the Bulls ...
