USF gets $1.3-million donation for new golf facility

With $35-million in facility upgrades wrapping up this summer and a major renovation of the Sun Dome about to begin, USF has another impressive piece of construction coming soon. The Bulls have secured a $1.3-million donation that will be used to build a state-of-the-art indoor golf facility for USF's men's and women's teams at the campus golf course, The Claw.

An official announcement on the donation is expected later this month, and the facility will include three indoor hitting bays, technology for video swing analysis, as well as new locker rooms and offices for players and staff. The building will be located next to the Bulls' short-game practice area, and could be in place in time for the spring 2012 season.

It's another new facility in what has been an ambitious makeover of USF's athletic district, with two new stadiums already in place for baseball and softball, another coming for soccer this summer, as well as new practice fields for football and a 51,000-square foot basketball practice facility on the south side of the Sun Dome. The 30-year-old basketball arena itself has been approved for a $35-million renovation of its own, which should be completed by the end of this year.

Golf has USF's two youngest head coaches in Chris Malloy and Marci Kornegay. Kornegay was named Big East Coach of the Year in 2010, while the Bulls' Shena Yang was last year's Big East Freshman of the Year. Malloy was hired last summer after four seasons as an assistant coach at Florida State. Both coaches graduated from Mississippi in 2001.
