USF-Kansas: No Friday night lights downtown
Fans have been asking me if, as with last year's nationally televised September showdown with West Virginia, USF will get its school colors in the Tampa skyline at the top of the SunTrust Financial Centre for Friday's game against No. 13 Kansas.
The answer, unfortunately, is no, as the SunTrust building is undergoing an overhaul to the lighting at the top of the 36-story building. So says Nancy Brusher, vice president of marketing for the Stiles Corporation, the Fort Lauderdale-based company that owns and operates the building.
"We will not be able to have the building lighted," said Brusher, noting a change from the current fluorescent lights to a new computerized LED system that will allow for future color changes at the push of a button. Brusher said construction should be completed before the end of football season, so the building could be decorated in green for late-season home games against Rutgers or Connecticut in November.
No word on whether any other downtown landmarks might go green for Friday night's game ...The Times building, of course, already has green lettering.
