USF LB Barrington in jail on license issues again

For the second time in a year, USF linebacker Sam Barrington is in jail because of problems stemming from a charge of driving with a suspended license.

Barrington, a 19-year-old sophomore from Jacksonville expected to be the team's starting middle linebacker this fall, was arrested Wednesday afternoon in Tampa on an outstanding warrant related to a June citation for driving with license cancelled, suspended or revoked with knowledge. Barrington was booked into county jail at 4:13 p.m. and was released at 9:10 p.m. on $250 bond.

Barrington ran into nearly identical trouble exactly one year ago today, turning himself in on an outstanding warrant relating to a June 2009 arrest for driving with license suspended with knowledge, a misdemeanor. Wednesday was the sixth time he has been stopped in Hillsborough County for a traffic citation in 13 months, with three citations resolved with fines paid and another dismissed. His arrest comes one week before USF's football players report for preseason training camp; last year's came nine days before the start of camp and did not result in any suspension from games.

USF's football players have had trouble with driver's license issues -- running back Mike Ford was arrested on that charge in December, and former cornerback Jerome Murphy was arrested Saturday near campus for driving without a valid license.

USF coach Skip Holtz was aware of Barrington's arrest Wednesday but did not want to make any comment until he had spoken with Barrington personally.
