USF men's basketball practice underway

Best moment from USF's first basketball practice of the preseason Friday was as Stan Heath was wrapping up a TV interview at the end of the court. He's been asked if sophomore Shaun Noriega is really the kind of 3-point shooter the Bulls need, and Heath calls for a ball from practice. He calls to Noriega, passes him the ball and asks him to take a shot for him. Swish.

Can he do the same consistently in a game? That will be a big question as the Bulls move forward in the post-Dominique Jones era. Talking to Heath on Friday, he has great confidence in his post players, that Gus Gilchrist and Jarrid Famous will be among the league's best, and he's liking the progress he's already seen from his new backcourt.

Gilchrist and Famous will represent USF at the Big East basketball media day in New York next week -- Jose Fernandez will bring Porche Grant and Leondra Doomes-Stephens, both seniors, to the women's basketball media day. Lots more to come from basketball, but here's an interview with Gilchrist.

-- Thoughts and prayers to Stan Heath and his family, as his mother Patricia died earlier this week in his native Michigan at the age of 70. Heath won't be with the team on Monday or Tuesday to attend services but will meet up with Gilchrist and Famous at the Big East event in New York on Wednesday.
