Call it slow progress for USF's athletic department, which has moved up in the national all-sports Directors' Cup, going from 116th a year ago to 105th in the 2009-10 standings.

The ranking, which is based on success in all NCAA postseason events, still shows USF as the fifth-lowest school among the 66 BCS football programs, but the Bulls made up a little bit of ground after being third-to-last a year ago. USF was 12th in the Big East last year and has moved up to 10th, passing Pittsburgh and staying ahead of Cincinnati among the league's football schools.

USF's points came from four teams -- men's soccer and football in the fall and men's track and women's tennis this spring, with soccer and women's tennis getting the highest point totals. USF has had as many as nine teams score points, when the Bulls finished their highest, 59th overall, in 2001.

USF -- which had been 49th nationally after the fall sports -- also moved back ahead of UCF, which finished 90th a year ago but dropped to 106th. The full lineup of state schools: Florida 2nd, Florida State 5th, Miami 58, USF 105, UCF 106, North Florida 160, Bethune-Cookman and Florida Atlantic 204, Stetson 223, Florida A&M 236.

The four BCS schools to finish lower than USF? That'd be Pitt at 112, Mississippi State at 114, Cincinnati at 116 and Kansas State at 123.
