USF to open Women's NIT at home vs. FAU
For the seventh time in nine seasons, USF has earned a spot in the Women's NIT, and the Bulls will open the 64-team tournament Thursday at home in the USF Rec Center against Florida Atlantic.
The Bulls (17-15) finished ninth in the Big East standings and saw the conference send eight teams to the NCAA field. USF has had success in the WNIT in past seasons, most notably winning the tournament with a 27-win season in 2009.
Florida Atlantic went 17-12 this season, including an 11-5 mark in the Sun Belt. The Owls have an RPI rating of 163, compared to 91 for the Bulls. The two teams met last season, with USF winning 80-46 in Tampa.
If the Bulls can win Thursday, they'll advance to face the winner of Stetson and Florida International. Three other Big East teams -- Villanova, Syracuse and Cincinnati - were named to the WNIT field on Monday night.
