USF roundup: Men's soccer wins at Wake Forest
USF's first football game week starts with practice tonight in preparation for Saturday's opener at Notre Dame, but first, a handful of links to catch up on a busy weekend. First, USF's men's soccer team opened its regular season with an impressive 2-0 win at a Wake Forest team ranked as high as No. 13, getting a goal from newcomer Dom Dwyer and a shutout by Michigan transfer Chris Blais.
Wake Forest had a huge crowd of 4,123 on hand, according to USF's official site, and according to Wake Forest's site, it's the first time in Demon Deacons history that the team lost a regular-season match in the month of August, dropping to 13-1-1 all-time; they also remind that USF avenged a 5-0 loss in the 2008 NCAA Tournament. USF returns home to face Georgia State on Friday in its first regular-season game at Corbett Soccer Stadium.
College soccer is tricky with rankings because there's greater variation among the polls -- the NSCAA coaches poll, for instance, has Wake Forest in "also receiving votes" territory; Soccer Times has them at No. 21; Soccer America has Wake at 13 and USF at 16. In all three, USF was ranked lower than Wake, so it's a significant road win either way.
-- USF volleyball was swept in three games against New Mexico State, and the Bulls (0-2) now return home to open their season in the Recreation Center on Friday against Eastern Kentucky.
-- USF commitment Tyler Cameron, the quarterback from Jupiter, threw for more than 400 yards and four touchdowns on Friday night, according to PB Gametime.
-- I rarely link to Bleacher Report content, but made an exception here because it's (a) refreshingly not a slideshow and (b) only has 93 views at this point. I feel confident you won't read another piece more specifically designed to make USF fans angry. It starts with the headline "The South Florida Bulls are Bull."
-- Bit of a random link, but since we wrote about Notre Dame and scissor lifts last week, here's the site Notre Dame agreed to launch to better educate the public about aerial-lift safety.
