USF scrimmage today at noon in Vero Beach
Headed back over to Vero Beach one more time this morning to attend USF's second fall scrimmage -- starts at noon and is open to fans, and the drive across 60 is really only about two and a half hours -- so we'll have plenty of notes and updates from the former Dodgertown complex.
-- We also should have the AP preseason top 25 this morning -- I posted my ballot yesterday, but will be curious to see how many votes the Bulls pick up in "also receiving votes" territory. It's reasonable to think USF could be ranked if the Bulls are 3-0 after Rutgers, or even sooner if there are upsets in the first two weeks.
-- I didn't get our season preview up in time yesterday before USF women's soccer officially opened the fall season with its opener at home against Central Florida, but the Knights -- ranked as high as No. 12 nationally -- prevailed 3-1 at Corbett. Marsha Harper had the lone goal for the Bulls. Fun banter on Twitter after the match, as UCF associate AD Zack Lassiter tweeted "Is there a better way to kickoff the fall season than beating USF" You know, of course, that it's "kick off" as a verb, and USF's Bill McGillis replied with a friendly "Easy, big boy." Yes, this will be a fun rivalry.
-- Day late to link this, but Friday's paper had a preview on USF's pass defense, one of the lingering vulnerabilities the Bulls are working to address entering the season. If that doesn't give you enough to read before the scrimmage, check out the Times' Hometeam rankings of the top 100 area football recruits -- USF's local commitments are in there, with Mitchell Wright at No. 32, Bruce Hector 40, Cameron Ruff 46 and Robby Garcia 66.
