USF signee named juco All-American

Lots of other news coming today, but wanted to drop in a note on Jasmine Sepulveda, the guard from Kirkwood Community College in Iowa who signed with USF last fall. Sepulveda was one of 10 players named as Women's Basketball Coaches Association All-Americans on Tuesday. Sepulveda just finishing leading Kirkwood to a national Division II junior college national championship, scoring a team-high 18 points Saturday in a 29-point win in the championship game and earning tournament MVP honors.

One note we didn't get into the game story from Monday night's WNIT win against Coppin State: sophomore guard Shantia Grace did not start for the first time this season, instead benched for the opening 4:41 for what is likely a minor disciplinary action. I didn't get to ask coach Jose Fernandez about the lineup change, but Fernandez went to his bench far more than usual, playing 12 players in what was a close game until the final eight minutes or so. The bench wasn't particularly effective -- take away Grace, and the subs went 1-for-5 from the field for four points in 29 minutes. Center Stephanie Sarosi had three of USF's school-record 16 blocks, and rarely-used reserves Jessica Jackson, Caitlin Mitryk and Melissa Dalembert made appearances. Check back for more notes later ...
