USF signee Smith named juco Player of Year
Andrea Smith, a guard from Lakeland signed to play for USF next season, has been named Junior College/Community College Player of the Year by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association.
Smith, a 5-foot-8 sophomore at Gulf Coast Community College, averaged 17.2 points and 4.6 rebounds a game in leading her team to a 28-1 record and No. 2 national ranking. Smith and her twin sister, Andrell, both signed with the Bulls out of Lake Gibson High and will arrive at USF together this fall.
Gulf Coast opens play Tuesday as one of 16 teams in the National Junior College Athletic Association's national championships in Kansas. Gulf Coast's first game is Tuesday at 2 p.m. against South Georgia, with the tournament's championship game set for Saturday night.
We're still waiting for word on the Women's NIT -- USF should find out by 11 p.m. who and where they'll be playing in this week's opening round. My guess? A repeat of 2008, with a first-round game at Florida Gulf Coast. Coach Jose Fernandez thinks the Bulls could play at Florida, which is 14-16 but could make the tournament if they get the automatic berth given to each conference's top team not taken by the NCAA. Stay tuned for updates later tonight ...
