USF soccer to open new stadium Aug. 20 vs. UT
USF's new soccer stadium is nearing completion, with about six weeks before construction is wrapped up, and Bulls fans will get their first look at the new venue when USF's men's team plays an exhibition Aug. 20 against the University of Tampa.
The cross-town rivalry will be the first event played in the new stadium, but the first official game will come on Aug. 26, when USF's women's team plays host to Indiana for its season opener. The men's team's first official home game will be on Friday, Sept. 2, against Georgia State as part of a doubleheader, with the women's team playing host to Vanderbilt the same night.
Both teams will be able to showcase their new home against elite national competition -- on the women's side, defending national champion Notre Dame will come to Tampa on Sept. 23 (night before home football game vs. UTEP), and the men's home schedule includes St. John's (10-6-2 in 2010), Saint Louis (Doug Woolard's old school) and UC-Irvine (14-3-3 last season).
The soccer stadium will be just north of USF's new baseball and softball stadiums, immediately east of USF's main athletics building and south of the new football practice fields. Construction has been ongoing since last fall, and you can see a photo album showing the progress on USF's official site. Here's our blog post from last August with the first renderings of what the stadium would look like.
