USF softball picked to finish 6th in Big East
Ken Eriksen's USF softball team will enter the 2011 season in an unfamiliar position -- not among the Big East's top preseason teams. The Bulls were picked to finish sixth in the conference's preseason poll of league coaches, the lowest such ranking in USF's six seasons in the Big East.
The Bulls finished first or second in the regular season in each of their first three Big East seasons, and they'd never entered a season picked lower than third until last year, when the coaches pegged them fifth out of 13 teams. USF struggled to a 24-29 record and a 9-13 conference mark, finishing seventh in the standings and missing the cut for the conference tournament.
With a new stadium opening next month, Eriksen has been optimistic about the 2011 season, with solid young pitching and several newcomers expected to upgrade the Bulls' lineup, which hit just .242 last year after hitting .284 in 2009.
