USF's Jones left off three All-Big East teams

USF sophomore guard Dominique Jones wasn't among 16 players honored with first-, second- and third-team All-Big East honors, relegated to an honorable mention as the conference's postseason accolades were announced Sunday. Jones also earned honorable mention last year as a freshman.

“With so many great players and teams in the BIG EAST, it is a well deserved honor for Dominique to be named as an honorable mention all-league pick,” USF coach Stan Heath said in a statement. “He’s been an integral piece to our team and been very productive on both ends of the court. His best basketball is still ahead of him and he will continue to work hard on improving.”

The slight is more like a reflection of where USF finished in the Big East standings -- 14th, with a 4-14 record -- than it is of Jones, who finished fourth in the league in scoring in conference play, averaging 19 points per game. Of the 16 players named to the three All-Big East teams, all played for teams that finished 11th or higher in the league standings.

Jones led the Bulls in scoring, rebounds and steals, and finished 11 off Chris Howard's team lead in assists. He was the only Big East player to rank among the Big East leaders in conference play for points (fourth), rebounds (19th) and assists (14th). He also led the Big East in minutes played, averaging 37.4 per game.

USF forward Gus Gilchrist was not among six players on the league's All-Freshman team. Here's a full rundown of the All-Big East honors from the conference's official site.
