USF's Mitchell, Joyce shine at state track meet

T-rexlongjump For the second year in a row, USF's football signees have made a strong showing at the state high school track championships, with Hillsborough cornerback Terrence Mitchell and DeLand safety Mark Joyce leading the way among the future Bulls.

Mitchell -- shown here in a great pic by Willie J. Allen Jr. -- took first place in Class 3A in the long jump, third in the 100 meters (more on that later) and 10th in the triple jump. His winning mark in the long jump was 23 feet, 3 inches, and he ran the 100 meters in 10.74 seconds.

Joyce, running on Saturday, took third place in the 110-meter hurdles in Class 4A, with a time of 14.16 seconds, the same time in which he won his preliminary heat.

Other future football Bulls were busy this weekend -- running back Tiger Powell of Lake City Columbia showed his strength by finishing seventh in the discus in 3A with a mark of 145 feet, 3 inches. And receiver Alex Mut, a 2011 USF commitment from Punta Gorda Charlotte, took seventh in the long jump behind Mitchell and was part of Charlotte's third-place entry in the 4x400-meter relay.

Who beat Mitchell in the 100 meters? First place went to junior Mike Bellamy of Charlotte, expected to be perhaps the state's No. 1 running back prospect for next season, and second place went to Gibbs' Jarvis West, who signed with Iowa State. Taking seventh in the same race was Nature Coast junior receiver JuJuan Story, a USF target who is picking up big offers, most recently Notre Dame.
