USF's Nevins honored as Big East pitcher of week
USF freshman left-hander Sara Nevins, who carries a scoreless streak of 41.1 innings into Wednesday's home doubleheader against Notre Dame, has been named Big East Pitcher of the Week for her dominating work last week.
Nevins, a Pinellas Park graduate who has earned the honors twice this season, went 2-0 with a save in the Bulls' three-game sweep of Connecticut this weekend. She hasn't allowed a run in her last 11 appearances, a streak that goes back to April 3 and includes six of her 14 wins this spring. With her eighth save of the season, Nevins is now tied for the national lead and has reset USF's school single-season record, which had been seven, by Cristi Ecks in 2007.
USF junior outfielder Gina Kafalas was named to the Big East's weekly honor roll after going 5-for-8 with six runs in the three-game sweep.
USF (32-16, 12-1) is now tied with DePaul for first place in the conference standings -- the Bulls have just five conference games remaining, first the doubleheader against Notre Dame, then a three-game series at DePaul to finish the regular season on May 7-8. DePaul (12-1) and Notre Dame (9-1) both have more games remaining than USF does -- the Blue Demons have eight games left, while the Fighting Irish have 10. USF has lost four games to inclement weather in trips to St. John's and Rutgers this season.
