Video: Catching up with USF coach Stan Heath

Football season is about to get underway, but I had a chance Monday to catch up with USF men's basketball coach Stan Heath, who has a newly renovated Sun Dome to play in this season and optimism about this team building on its NCAA Tournament success in March. Here's a quick video from the Muma Center, which has a sharp new mural on the wall of the one-year-old practice facility.

Few more notes: Sophomore point guard Anthony Collins has been cleared to resume normal practice after being limited this summer by an injury to his right hand. "It's a little bit of a setback, because one of the things he and I both wanted to work on was outside shooting, but when he comes back here in the fall (Sunday), he'll have another two and a half months before we get going," Heath said. "I think he'll be fine."

-- Heath has been pleased by the progress of frontcourt newcomers Waverly Austin and Jordan Omogbehin. He envisions Omogbehin helping in a limited role this season -- perhaps 8 to 10 minutes off the bench -- "I do think at some point in time, he's going to be a very, very valuable player for us," Heath said.

-- Heath is "fully on board" to have a "Madness" type event to celebrate the first practice of the season, which should be on Friday, Oct. 12. No formal plans have been announced by USF yet.

Interesting note from a Big East politics standpoint -- the Bulls already have 18 school banners hanging from the rafters for the new Big East lineup you'll see in 2013-14. That means schools like UCF, Houston, Memphis, SMU and Temple are already represented in the Sun Dome ... and outgoing members Pittsburgh and Syracuse aren't up there, even though they'll play in the league this season. Syracuse will play at USF this spring.
