Walk-ons Kloss, Breit, Cavalieri earn scholarships

USF coach Skip Holtz takes great pride in the tradition of promoting walk-ons to scholarship players, and at the end of Wednesday's practice, he announced to the team that three more Bulls had earned scholarships this fall: sophomore Marvin Kloss, who is expected to handle kickoffs for the second year in a row, and senior fullbacks Chris Breit and Spencer Cavalieri.

Kloss, from Naples Barron Collier, has held off senior Maikon Bonani for the kickoff job and would be Bonani's backup for field goals and extra points, putting him in place to contend for a larger role in 2013. Breit, a Plant graduate, was USF's primary fullback last season after starting his walk-on career as a linebacker; he had three tackles in 2010. And Cavalieri, an offensive lineman from Gaither who started his football career at Marist, is now the top backup at fullback.

Holtz already put another senior walk-on, safety Ernie Tabuteau, on scholarship for his final season. Quarterback Bobby Eveld and receiver Stephen Bravo-Brown came into USF's program as walk-ons but are now on scholarship. USF will have redshirt freshman walk-ons in key roles on special teams this fall, with Hillsborough's Mattias Ciabatti expected to handle punting and Jacksonville's David Burdetsky as long-snapper.

SHOULD BE OK: Sophomore Darrell Williams, expected to make his first career start Saturday at left tackle, didn't practice Wednesday after suffering a minor ankle sprain in Tuesday's practice. Senior Damien Edwards, who was working as the starting left guard the first half of preseason drills, replaced him at left tackle Wednesday, though Holtz said he expects Williams to be able to play Saturday.

THIS AND THAT: Holtz confirmed new starters at two key positions on defense, with senior George Baker getting the nod at cornerback and junior Tevins Mims starting at defensive end. As expected, junior Luke Sager will also make his first start at defensive tackle, and Holtz said senior Cory Grissom will also start there, having recovered from offseason ankle surgery.
