West Virginia hands Bulls home loss, 50-44
It was a defensive battle as expected, but USF took a 50-44 home loss to West Virginia on Saturday, failing to score in the final 2:57 at Tampa Bay Times Forum.
The Bulls (19-12, 12-6 in Big East) had a chance to take the lead with two minutes left, but Augustus Gilchrist had his shot blocked by West Virginia's Kevin Jones. West Virginia went 6-for-6 on free throws the rest of the way to clinch the victory.
It's complicated, but USF won't know its seeding in the Big East tournament for another hour -- if Georgetown loses at Marquette and Cincinnati beats Villanova, there would be a three-way tie for fourth, and USF would wind up the sixth seed; otherwise, USF is fifth.
About that tiebreaker: The three teams are all 1-1 within the subgroup, so the next tiebreaker is who beat the team highest in the Big East standings. In this case, Cincinnati and Georgetown both beat Marquette, which eliminates USF from the group. Cincinnati then beat Georgetown head-to-head, so the Bearcats get the double-bye and the 4th seed, then Georgetown, then USF.
