Yes, it's time to honor a true USF pioneer

I feel bad, in that USF's athletics department earnestly sends out a Varsity Club Alum of the Week, and I haven't linked to those honors here, with such distinguished USF grads as MLS star Jeff Cunningham

But I have to pass along this week's feature, which has an interview with former USF mascot Jody Glassman, who if you weren't aware -- to be clear, I'm quoting here -- "was one of the few women to portray Rocky. She would like to think it helped open the gender barriers in the mascot world."

It's not really a glass ceiling, so much as it is a big, furry ceiling. I would think, fundamentally, one of the most unfortunate parts of being a female mascot pioneer is that nobody in the stands actually knows you're breaking those barriers, except for the occasional comment that "Rocky kind of dances like a girl lately."

I'd like to thank USF athletics for the photo. I'm not sure if it is a photo of Jody Glassman or not, but if it isn't, I'd like to think it's a woman who can be in that suit thanks to women before her, women like Jody Glassman.
