Defense impresses Taggart in morning workout
VERO BEACH -- Willie Taggart said he expects his defense to be farther along earlier in camp, and after a strong showing by the USF offense earlier this week, he said the defense stepped up again in Sunday's morning workout.
"Defense really played well," he said. "The other day we had a live period and I thought our offense gave it to our defense, which was different. Usually when you start off, the defense always has an advantage, but our offense really did well the other day. Today, we had some live periods, goal line and short yardage situations and I thought our defense really stepped up."
Taggart said redshirt freshman safety Jalen Spencer had a splash play, pulling the ball away from receiver Andre Davis for an interception that ramped up the defense's energy level. Taggart also singled out running back Darius Tice and defensive ends Julius Forte and Ryne Giddins.
TWEET CAREFULLY: Taggart is on a self-imposed Twitter ban during camp to show where his focus is, but he's allowed players to continue posting on Twitter during camp, saying they've earned the right to do so, so long as they're saying the right things.
"We're going to let them grow up and be kids, but we also want them to do it the right way," he said. "Understanding that Twitter isn't text messaging, and they need to be representing the university the right way. If they show us they can't, then they won't be on Twitter. It's very simple. If you use it, use it the right way."
Taggart asks players not to post anything about the X's and O's of scheme and strategy, and of course, to keep a positive tone.
"We're constantly reminding them what they need to be doing. If they're promoting our football team, promoting themselves, there's no reason for them not to do it," Taggart said.
THIS AND THAT: Receiver D'Vario Montgomery was held out of both of Sunday's practice with a tweaked hamstring. Taggart said he doesn't expect him out long. ... The Bulls' only practice open to fans during their stay in Vero Beach is on Saturday, starting at 9:30 a.m., and the team returns home to campus after that workout.
