Egbunu's eligibility under review

USF acknowledged Friday it's checking into allegations leveled against the men's basketball program, presumably from the father of onetime signee Drew Davis.

Linzy Davis told the Tampa Bay Times on Friday he has been in contact with the NCAA regarding the recruitment of Bulls 6-foot-10 freshman John Egbunu.

A Nigeria native who resided with the Davis family roughly two years, Egbunu's age documents and Nigerian school transcripts were falsified, Linzy Davis says. USF has received no letter of inquiry from the NCAA, spokesman Brian Siegrist said.

Egbunu and Drew Davis both signed with USF in November 2012. Davis didn't qualify academically and currently attends a prep school in Columbus, Ga.

The school didn't specify the player at the center of the probe. Egbunu is expected to start Saturday's home game against No. 19 Cincinnati.

"We have initiated a review of the matter and have asked the NCAA to assist us," a USF statement said. "The student-athlete was completely certified and cleared by the NCAA Eligibility Center prior to enrolling."
