Familiar face 'crashes' Matt Grothe's wedding
Tack on another title to Rocky the Bull's expansive resume. USF's most distinctive mascot, cheerleader and costumed community ambassador also is a wedding crasher.
Unbeknownst to groom (and ultra-popular ex-Bulls QB) Matt Grothe and bride Alyssa Wright, Rocky entered the couple's reception Saturday in Lithia as the Sugarhill Gang dance anthem "Apache (Jump on It)" blared over the sound system.
Wright's mom, Susan, arranged Rocky's appearance through the school; WTSP news reporter Charles Billi announced his entrance. Once the shock subsided, several former USF cheerleaders in attendance (including Wright herself) hoisted Rocky in a stunt lift.
"They were stunned," Susan Wright said.
"I teased (Grothe) a little bit prior, that there was a special guest coming. They were like, 'Jim Leavitt? Did he actually come?' ... And then Alyssa thought it was her idol Jessica Simpson, and I said, 'No, it's better.' They kept trying to guess and guess and guess.
"When (Rocky) came in, everybody just really enjoyed that."
Grothe, still second on the Bulls' career passing yardage chart (8,669), proposed to Wright at USF's homecoming game in 2013.
