Football practice report (Nov. 6)
TAMPA – After struggling to contain Houston’s fast-paced offense in last week's 35-23 loss, USF’s defense is focusing on the basics during its final bye week of the season.
Houston true freshman John O’Korn finished 22-for-25 for 263 yards and three touchdowns, while the Cougars also amassed 95 rushing yards and two TDs.
“At the beginning of that game, we gave away 21 early points and we feel like we shouldn’t have.” said Bulls S Mark Joyce, who had nine tackles. “Tackling was a minus early, but we picked it up later in the game. We’re definitely working on it this week.”
HOME SWEET HOME: Senior DL Tevin Mims, a Texas native, was treated to a small family reunion at Reliant Stadium.
Mims said 10 relatives made the two-hour, 40-minute trip from his hometown of Round Rock to watch him play in a Bulls uniform for the first time in person.
“It was a great experience," said Mims, who transferred to USF from Navarro (Texas) Junior College in 2012. “It just felt good being home and I just felt real comfortable being home and playing at Houston.”
AUDIBLE: "We don't haze. A guy's not going to do anything they don't want to do around here. If they're going to do anything it's because they chose to do it. That's how we do it. We don't haze. We're going to have fun and there are other ways to have fun without doing something against somebody's will. We're not doing that." -- Bulls coach Willie Taggart on what suddenly has evolved into a hot-button football issue (see Dolphins, Miami)
