Taggart: Chris Oladokun can play if needed
Coach Willie Taggart indicated Thursday the right foot fracture suffered earlier this week by No. 3 QB Asiantii Woulard isn't season-threatening.
But if it is, he has no problem using freshman Chris Oladokun -- a Sickles High alumnus -- in a pinch.
Woulard, the UCLA transfer beaten out by redshirt freshman Brett Kean for the backup job in preseason camp, wore a protective boot on his right foot during Thursday morning's practice. Afterward, Taggart said Woulard will "be back soon."
"But I like Chris," Taggart added.
Oladokun, who passed for more than 4,000 yards in three prep seasons (including two at Alonso), has mostly drawn kudos from Taggart this preseason. As recently as Saturday night's closed scrimmage, he tucked and dashed up the middle for a 60-yard TD.
"I think Chris is gonna be one heck of a football player for us," Taggart said. "I was really impressed. I can sleep at night knowing that QB position is pretty well in place right now."
SANDERS FLIPS TO USF: Tampa Catholic senior two-way star Bentlee Sanders announced via Twitter on Thursday morning he has "flipped" his non-binding commitment from Toledo to USF.
Sanders (5-foot-8, 165 pounds), deemed a three-star prospect by 247Sports and a two-star by Scout.com, committed to the Rockets in early July but attended USF's Saturday Night Lights camp shortly thereafter.
KEEP AN EYE ON...: When asked Thursday which young linebacker has stood out this preseason, both starters -- redshirt junior MLB Auggie Sanchez and senior WLB Nigel Harris -- singled out redshirt freshman WLB Nico Sawtelle.
"I'll be the first one to say it right here, that he's gonna be a big-time linebacker at USF," Sanchez said.
Sawtelle, 20, totaled nearly 300 tackles and 23 sacks his final two seasons at Jensen Beach High, earning third-team Class 6A all-state honors as a senior. With Nick Holman -- the backup weakside 'backer after spring drills -- having transferred, Sawtelle and freshman Andre Polk Jr. are among those who have logged reps behind Harris.
"He's there, but he still has to learn the playbook a little more and just kind of that type deal, learn how to study film and stuff like that," Sanchez said. "But just pure instincts, pure just playing football, he just knows how to play and he's gonna be real good for us."
ODDS AND ENDS: Taggart said Brent Gordon and FSU transfer Jonathan Hernandez still are competing at punter. "We will (make a decision) soon, but I feel good about it," he said. "I feel really good about it." ... No walk-ons have been awarded scholarships so far this preseason, Taggart said. ... With preseason camp formally ending last weekend, the Bulls have spent this week preparing for season-opening foe Towson. ... Sanchez said it was "very humbling" to be selected one of two team captains (QB Quinton Flowers is the other) by his peers. "For them to just have that faith in me and for them to believe in me is big," he said. "It is truly an honor."
