No Bull: Winston wears green and gold at USF spring game
The 4,418 fans who turned out on a warm, windy Saturday for USF's spring-ending intrasquad game were treated to scoring, sacks, street vendors, and a little surreality.
Yep, that was Bucs QB Jameis Winston -- FSU Heisman Trophy winner -- wearing a dark-green Bulls shirt on the north sideline.
"No. 92, LaDarrius Jackson. He's a family member of mine, so I'm out there watching him and supporting him," Winston said of the Bulls' defensive end, who recently transferred from Hinds (Miss.) Community College. "That's the only reason I've got this Bulls shirt on."
Actually, the two are family only in the colloquial sense, having known each other and played together since around junior high. Both hail from outside Birmingham, Ala., and even share what a USF official called a "life coach."
It is widely believed Winston encouraged Jackson to sign with USF, the first four-year program to offer him a scholarship.
"I've got to support my family," Winston said. "And Coach (Willie) Taggart is doing an amazing job out here, so I'm supporting him as well."
For the record, Saturday's event was at least the second USF on-campus contest Winston has attended lately. In March, he watched the Bulls baseball team fall to FSU, albeit mostly from the Seminoles dugout.
"Jameis is a good guy," Taggart said.
"I met Jameis when he got drafted here and have seen him on occasion. He's been great every time I've seen him. ... I know he came over to watch his friend and support his friend. It was great to have a Buccaneer here to support the Bulls.
"Again, it's the bay. It's all about the bay, baby."
