Notes: Davis happy to see Tampa talent staying home
Here are Tuesday's practice notes from Times correspondent Jeff Odom ...
TAMPA -- USF junior WR Andre Davis, a Jefferson High product, said he's been impressed with the amount of local high school recruits making commitments to join USF. The most recent being Plant High CB Mazzi Wilkins, who orally committed Monday, giving the team seven total from the Tampa Bay area in the Class of 2014.
"I'm just happy that kids that kids are staying close and wanting to (play) for the hometown in Tampa," Davis said. "(Coach Willie Taggart) has been doing a good job recruiting the Tampa area. ... It's good for them and it's going to be good for our program as well."
STARTING: Walk-on P Mattias Ciabatti (Hillsborough) has already been placed on scholarship by USF starting this fall, and now the redshirt sophomore has been named the Bulls' starter.
"He's competed in the past pretty well, so I think he was looking forward to the opportunity to be the man," special teams coach Stu Holt said Tuesday. "We're excited about where he's at right now and his approach."
Ciabatti appeared in one game last season against Chattanooga, punting for 48 yards.
