O'Neal breaks own triple jump record
USF senior Matthew O'Neal has put another leap -- and bound -- between himself and every other triple jumper in school history.
O'Neal set a meet record and eclipsed his own school indoor mark with a jump of 54 feet, 8 inches Friday at the Joe Donahue Games in Boston. The distance, the NCAA's best so far this season, broke O'Neal's previous school record (53-11.25) by more than 8 inches.
A four-time track All-American and former two-sport athlete for the Bulls, O'Neal bypassed soccer this past fall, and has won the triple jump in each of his first three indoor events. Friday's effort marked the first time he ever has eclipsed 54 feet -- indoor or outdoor. His best outdoor mark is a school-recored 53-8.5.
