Package deal coming to USF coaching staff?
Now that USF's season formally has ended, the hirings to Charlie Strong's staff -- as we've projected -- could arrive in a flurry.
At the very least, they could arrive in tandem.
As expected, Strong reportedly will bring Sterling Gilbert -- his offensive coordinator last season at Texas -- to Tampa. Josh Newberg of 247Sports, citing an unnamed source, reported Friday that Gilbert and Longhorns OL coach Matt Mattox both will join Strong's first Bulls staff.
Makes complete sense.
Gilbert, 38, and Mattox, 34, have worked together the past four seasons -- at Eastern Illinois (2013), Bowling Green ('14), Tulsa ('15) and Texas. They first worked together under Art Briles at Houson (Mattox's alma mater) before dispersing a few seasons.
Statistically, they notched their best season under Dino Babers at Eastern Illinois.
The Panthers led Division I-AA in scoring offense (48.2 ppg) and total offense (589.5 ypg) and finished second in pass offense (372.4 ypg). QB Jimmy Garoppolo, who now has a gig as Tom Brady's backup in New England, threw for 5,050 yards and 50 TDs that season.
Gilbert, a former quarterback at Angelo (Texas) State, worked at four Texas high schools before moving to the college ranks.
