USF football boasts American's biggest student section

We used to keep track of this in USF's Big East days, and the same now holds true in the American Athletic Conference, where USF football will have the largest student section in the league at Raymond James Stadium.

The Bulls allot 12,501 seats for students, which edges rival UCF (12,000) for the biggest student section in the American. USF had the biggest in the Big East since 2007, ahead of West Virginia at 12,000. The Bulls ramped up their student section from 8,000 to 12,501 in 2007, when USF rose to No. 2 in the national rankings.

A point of clarification: We got numbers from nine of the 10 schools in the league, but Temple doesn't really have a number to give -- any student can get in free with a student ID, but there isn't an area of the stadium specifically set aside as a student section, we were told. Temple has about 39,000 total students, so could be a decent number, but the Owls also averaged just 26,580 in announced home attendance last year. Rank them where you'd like. Here are the other nine -- many schools have the option to block off additional seating for students if the section is sold out.

1. USF       12,501

2. UCF       12,000

3. Rutgers   8,000

4. Cincinnati 6,000

5. Houston   5,000

5. Memphis  5,000

7. UConn     4,300

8. SMU        3,600

9. Louisville 3,000

(Temple: N/A)

Here are the numbers from last time we checked, in 2009.
