After missing more than a week of camp due to an unspecified illness, Bulls redshirt freshman QB Chris Oladokun returned to practice Friday, albeit as an observer in shorts.

The school hasn't elaborated on Oladokun's illness, but two sources close to the Sickles High alumnus said he's battling mononucleosis. Expected to contend with Brett Kean for the backup job in the preseason, he's expected to be sidelined roughly another couple of weeks.

Still visibly thicker in the upper body, Oladokun entered camp listed at 187 pounds, approximately 20 pounds heavier than when he arrived on campus last year.

Another Sickles alumnus, DE Josh Black, also appeared at Friday's practice in shorts. Black continues rehabbing an undisclosed injury.

Senior WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling (right upper leg) suited up for Friday's workout -- held in shorts, helmets and shoulder pads -- but didn't participate in any live reps open to reporters.

THE SKINNY ON HALL: Fifth-year senior LG Jeremi Hall, who estimates he weighed as much as 380 pounds earlier in his career, said Friday he's currently at 317.

"Right now I feel like I'm doing better with my technique and my get-offs, and just being quicker about everything with my pass-rush (technique)," said Hall, listed at 330 last season. "It just seems like everything is quicker right now."

Offensive line coach Matt Mattox said a certain degree of weight loss was essentially a prerequisite for Hall and his peers in offensive coordinator Sterlin Gilbert's system, which will feature one of the nation's fastest paces.

Hall and C Cameron Ruff have said the linemen did more sprints this offseason than ever.

"Getting everybody down on the line and just taking 5-yard sprints," Hall said. "Trying to give all you got like if you were in the game and doing a play."

ODDS AND ENDS: USF will stage its most extensive scrimmage of the preseason Saturday morning. It's closed to the public. ... Third-year sophomore Billy Atterbury continues logging first-team reps at right guard. ... Senior Darius Tice worked with the second team at running back Friday; D'Ernest Johnson remains the starter. ... Lake Worth Park Vista Community ATH Jake Collins, who committed to USF two weeks ago, de-committed Friday.
