USF announces 3 more football hirings (UPDATED)
The official Bulls football coaching staff announcements continue at an accelerated pace, with three more formally named to Charlie Strong's staff Wednesday.
Offensive line coach Matt Mattox, defensive backs coach/recruiting coordinator Corey Bell and tight ends/special teams coach Justin Burke bring the number of formally announced staff hirings to seven.
Additionally, Strong's director of player personnel at Texas, Mike Giglio, announced via Twitter he's headed to USF, presumably in the same role.
A Kansas native who played for Art Briles at Houston, Mattox has worked with new Bulls offensive coordinator Sterlin Gilbert the last four seasons -- at four different schools (Eastern Illinois, Bowling Green, Tulsa, Texas).
And while Strong's struggles at Texas have been well-chronicled, the Longhorns -- on Mattox's watch -- averaged 239.3 rushing yards a game in 2016, which ranked 17th in Division I-A. Longhorns RB D'Onta Foreman finished second nationally with 2,028 yards in only 11 contests.
“Matt has done a terrific job with the offensive line and the running game everywhere he has been and he and Sterlin work very well together,” Strong said in USF's news release.
“Matt is a young coach who brings a lot of energy and passion for the game of football and I think our players at South Florida will really enjoy working with him.”
Mattox inherits a unit that loses only two starters -- LT Kofi Amichia and RG Dominique Threatt -- from last season's team, which helped the Bulls finish fifth nationally in rush offense (285.3 ypg) and 14th in sacks allowed (1.15 per game).
Like Mattox, Bell's addition to Strong's staff previously had been widely reported. A Miami native and former South Carolina cornerback, his extensive south Florida recruiting connections made him a logical staff addition.
“Corey has had great success as a high school coach and a collegiate assistant in the state of Florida (FAU, Miami) and has deep roots in the Miami area,” Strong said. “He started at cornerback in the SEC and will be a great teacher and mentor for our players at South Florida.”
Burke played quarterback at N.C. State (2006-08) and Louisville (2008-10), and has spent the past six seasons on Strong's staffs with the Cardinals and Longhorns. He began his coaching career as a recruiting intern under Nick Saban at Alabama in 2011.
