USF's Andrea Smith drafted by WNBA's Sun
Former USF guard Andrea Smith was selected in the third round of Monday's WNBA Draft by the Connecticut Sun, becoming the Bulls' second WNBA draft selection, following Jessica Dickson in 2007.
Smith, who helped the Bulls to their first-ever NCAA Tournament win last month, was taken with the No. 35 overall pick, now has the chance to continue her playing career at the highest level.
"I'm really excited and humbled by the opportunity, but I'll still have to work to make the final roster," Smith said in a statement. "So there will be plenty of hours left to put in at the gym, but I'm just kind of speechless right now."
Smith is familiar with first-year Sun coach Anne Donovan, who lost to the Bulls twice this season as Seton Hall's head coach. Smith finished sixth in the Big East in scoring and fifth in 3-point percentage; Connecticut used its top pick on another Big East standout, UConn's Kelly Faris.
The WNBA preseason starts on May 11, with the regular season opening May 25.
