Newsome High alumnus Jackie Simpson, who leads the Bulls women's soccer team (13-3-2) into the American Athletic Conference tournament quarterfinals Tuesday, was named the AAC Defensive Player of the Year on Monday.

Simpson and Bulls senior M Olivia Chance made the All-AAC first team, with Chance -- a two-time first-team selection -- being the only unanimous pick. Sophomore GK Kat Elliott and senior D Alexis Rossi made the second team.

The full team can be found here.

A senior who has logged 1,594 minutes, Simpson is anchoring a Bulls back line that has surrendered only 12 goals (and 79 shots on goal) for a league-best 0.64 goals-against average. She has scored twice, including the game-winner in the 79th minute in a 1-0 victory against then-No. 20 Connecticut.

Elliott, who has recorded eight shutouts (five in conference play) and 65 saves, was edged for Goalkeeper of the Year by UConn's Emily Armstrong, who has posted four conference shutouts and 62 overall saves. Armstrong's 0.50 GAA in conference play is the AAC's best.
