USF's McGillis to be new athletic director at Southern Miss
Bill McGillis, USF's executive associate athletic director and Doug Woolard's top assistant since 2007, is leaving the Bulls to be the new athletic director at Southern Mississippi.
Southern Miss has a press conference scheduled for 1 p.m. ET, and McGillis will be announced as the school's new AD. The Golden Eagles are a league below USF, playing in Conference USA, but the move allows McGillis to run a college program with football for the first time. He was AD at Evansville before coming to USF.
McGillis supervised USF's ambitious recent run of facility upgrades that included new baseball, softball and soccer stadiums, a basketball practice facility and $35 million renovation of the Sun Dome. He also was very involved in USF's hiring of Willie Taggart as its head football coach in December.
He's the second departure from USF's administration this month, as assistant athletic director Jeremy Sharpe, who oversaw USF's sports information department, is leaving Aug. 1 to become associate AD at Arizona. McGillis' hiring was first reported by the Hattiesburg American in Mississippi.
