Williams on midseason Wooden Award watch list
Preseason watch lists carry little prestige based on their length. The more names watering down the list, the less cachet it carries.
Midseason watch lists are another matter, and Courtney Williams' name graces one of the country's most distinguished ones.
USF's No. 3 all-time scorer has made the Wooden Award's Midseason Top-20 women's list. The Wooden Award goes annually to the nation's top male and female players. Williams, currently 10th in Division I in scoring (22.2 ppg) is one of four American Athletic Conference players on the list, joining the UConn trio of Breanna Stewart (the 2015 Wooden winner), Morgan Tuck and Moriah Jefferson.
Williams and fellow watch list member Brittany Martin of Oklahoma State are the nation's only players averaging more than 20 points, eight rebounds and two assists. She needs only 68 points to overtake Shantia Grace (1,941 points) for second on USF's career list and, as we indicated Thursday, has a remote shot at eclipsing Jessica Dickson's school record (2,402).
