WNBA update: Williams set for debut, Jenkins waived
Though their names likely will be forever intertwined in USF women's basketball lore, Alisia Jenkins and Courtney Williams have watched the initial phase of their pro careers jut off into opposite trajectories.
Williams, the Phoenix Mercury's first-round pick (and eighth overall) in last month's WNBA Draft, totaled 26 points and 11 rebounds in two preseason games.
Her 15 points in the first one, an 81-73 win against Seattle, tied for the team high. Williams makes her formal pro debut Saturday afternoon -- three days after her 22nd birthday -- in Minneapolis in the Mercury's regular season opener against the Minnesota Lynx.
Jenkins wasn't so fortunate. On May 1, less than two weeks after signing a free-agent contract with the New York Liberty, the Bulls' all-time leading rebounder was waived. Her future plans aren't immediately clear, though it is widely believed Jenkins could prosper overseas.
