Tony Orlando and Gus

Singer Tony Orlando of "Tie a Yellow Ribbon'' fame is heading to Tampa Bay (sans Dawn) to help state Rep. Gus Bilirakis win a Congressional seat.

The Tarpon Springs Republican met Orlando at a Greek convention in Las Vegas last summer and Bilirakis said the singer, who is half Greek, quickly insisted he wanted help on the campaign. Bilirakis is running to succeed his father, U.S. Rep. Mike Bilirakis, and said Orlando is a fan of Mike Bilirakis' work on veterans issues.

Orlando will headline a holiday party Dec. 5 from 7 to 10 p.m. at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Community Center. It is open to the public. Without his band present, though, Bilirakis said he won't sing.

"He said he would raise money for me, but I chose not to do that. I wanted to share this event with everyone,'' said Bilirakis. ""We're going to do a little salute to the veterans, but I also want to do a little salute to the (campaign) volunteers.''

Meanwhile, Democratic U.S. Rep. Rahm Emmanuel, head of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, plans to attend a Dec. 1 fundraiser for Phyllis Busansky, a Democrat running for the same seat. No word yet on whether Emmanuel is willing to sing.

If Rahm is taking this lady seriously, I will too. But this seat is, as has been noted on this blog in the past, about to be inherited like a British baronetcy.

Rahm and the DCCC are for sure taking Busansky seriously. But has an incredible war chest created by his father and his big business special interests. We dems need to get behind Busansky with time AND money or Gus will simply out spend us.

Rahm isn't taking this seat seriously; if he was the DCCC would have been actively recruiting for this race. Rahm isn't coming for Busansky, he is using this event as an excuse to meet with the Dems running for the Jim Davis' seat.
Gus is going to win this election because he has been a successful legislator in Tallahassee and he has an outstanding record of constituent service. The voters will decide that they want a congressman to make them proud and they will choose Gus.

    You're wrong. Dead wrong.

Why do you make this stuff up?

Rahm committed to do this event for Busansky as a condition of her getting in the race. This one and another one in DC. Is he going to use the DC event to talk to the Davis candidates too?

And why does Rahm care about the race to replace Davis?

It's not a pick-up. Rahm's job is to WIN NEW SEATS. Not hold old ones.

    Get a grip.

Excellent points about Rahm and the DCCC. Sounds like they are taking this seriously.

And in my opinion, Gus has been a terrible legislator: big business has him in their pockets voting against the interests of the PEOPLE in our community. Gus is business as usual and we don't need more of that!

As a pro-business kind of guy, I'm not going to kick and fuss about Gus's being pro-business (though certainly there is an especially unsavory contribution-vote record here).

I am, however, terribly dismayed by the fact that in the 21st century, political office remains frequently hereditary-- a trend that shows only signs of acceleration. We've all seen Gus's accession to his father's seat coming for years, with his only credentials being his legislative "service." Can Pinellas Republicans actually believe that this is a healthy thing? My friends in the midst of the party shake their heads at it, but no one has done anything about it. There are so many more qualified Republicans for this seat. You would think there would be a "rebellion of the competent" here, too.

Tony Orlando appearing, but not singing?

Did they also think of inviting Donald Trump, but tell him to leave Melania and his checkbook at home?!

    Go Phyllis!

I want to announce that I too will be supporting Gus Bilirakis for Congress. He'll return this country to a better time, the 70s.
