The Eye of the CFO Hurricane

Thursday marks the official start of hurricane season in Florida. And by the looks of things, it also may mark the official start of the campaign for the Republican nomination for chief financial officer.

Gov. Jeb Bush's office has announced that he will sign a series of hurricane preparedness bills Thursday afternoon at the state Emergency Operations Center, and that those on hand will include ""Lt. Gov. Toni Jennings, Senate President Tom Lee ... " and others. (Bush recently endorsed Lee, you'll recall).

While Lee is standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Bush at the state EOC, his primary opponent, Rep. Randy Johnson, R-Celebration, will launch his campaign in Kissimmee at a kickoff with supporters at what he calls the "Blue Tarp Tour," which doesn't sound like an endorsement of the state's oversight of storm recovery and providing insurance.

Here's the question for CFO candidates. When it comes it the Governor's race, the two Republican candidates can't seem to invoke Jeb Bush's name enough and talk about extending his legacy.

Will any candidate for CFO say they want to continue the legacy of Tom Gallagher?

    Didn't think so!

I am now a Johnson supporter after Jeb hit below the belt. It appears I may have chosen correctly, since Lee is glomming onto Jeb for the photo op, while Johnson is out campaigning. I hope this is a classic tortoise v. hare race, and Johnson pulls off the upset of the campaign season! Now, if I can only get my man Gallagher to act more like Johnson and less like Lee...

Both cfo guys will say nice things about both Gallagher and Crist. But to your point, it will obviously be Johnson who will have an easier time being a Repub who also opposes the big insurance boys.
Lee is running an obvious insider campaign, and that will make it harder for him to criticize anything about insurance regulation.
I just don't think Gallagher's performance will even be a factor in the CFO race.
The Gov's race, yes, CFO, no.

Gallagher hasn't done a bad job as CFO....DAMN!!!

He is critized for being Insurance Commissioner, which he isn't.

What the hell is wrong with people??

The avergage person doesn't know what the Department of Financial Services is...that's because it is well managed and out of the news.

    Deceit and greed sucks.

Insurance Commissioner falls under CFO...just like Majority Leader falls under Senate President.

When subordinates fail, the boss must be accountable too

    Omega,
You're wrong. While the Insurance Commissioner is housed under the Department of Financial Services, the Commissioner is hired by the Governor and Cabinet. Acting as the Financial Services Commission, the Governor and Cabinet are responsible for oversight of insurance matters. Yes, that includes Charlie too.

You have surfaced again, albeit briefly. I have been looking for you ever since you asked me to respond to your question.
See the "Crist V. Davis in Tampa Bay" post on May 28th, for your answer. You can respond here, there or anywhere.

You are clearly not knowledgeable of how governmental agencies work. Let me help.

A "board" will select an "excutive director" but once hired the executive is directly responsive to the Chair of the board who is the responsible party for all the excutive actions and policies of the agency. In this case Gallagher plays the role of the Chair, since Macarty falls under "his" agency, the DFS plays the role of the Agency and McCarty plays the role of the executive director. Gallagher and DFS is most definitey connected to McCarty and furthermore it is DFS "direct" responsibily to investigate "Insurance" Fraud!

"Fla. SB 1596, HB 561 Tighten Grip on Insurance Fraud
    May 5, 2006

.."Gallagher, who oversees the Department of Financial Services which includes the Division of Insurance Fraud"..

Gallagher is "Mr Insurance Crises" and his past policies of Insurance Commissioner himself and currently responsibilties have brought on this crises to Floridians, while his Insuance Industry buddies send checks in droves to his campaign, even "illegal" contributions in the past, while this Industry shafts Flordians. Kick Gallagher out of Government for good!
