Lobbyists Disclose

Southern Strategy Group, a lobbying firm anchored by former House Speaker John Thrasher, reported annualized billings of up to $11.5 million based on its first quarter earnings report filed with the State Ethics Commission. Another of the capital's lobbying giants, Smith & Ballard, did even better, with first quarter receipts between $2.6 and $3.7 million.

The two companies were among the first to submit the newly required compensation reports following the Legislature's passage last December of tougher rules for the cadre of influence peddlers who represent hundreds of companies with business before the state.

More from the AP here.

Why did the AP report SSG's "annualized" but broke S&B down to the quarter?

It would've been fine but they've insisted on comparing the two..

The disclosure law only applies to contract lobbyists, not in-house lobbyists. I guess "hired gun" lobbyists are more of a concern to legislators than salaried lobbyists. Not a huge distinction in practice between the two groups, but a huge difference in disclosure.

I guess all the staffers and lobbyists don't want to comment on this? Or are still asleep?

Yes -- let's gawk at the lobbying firms income -- like this is the governments or medias damn business. I want newspapers to disclose their income since they influence legislation just as much as lobbyists.

With a ban on any type of gift to a legislator, why is it important how much income a lobbying firm brings in?

Sounds like big brother to me.

Especially since the lawyers don't have to disclose.
