Davis v. Smith, part III

As promised, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jim Davis has continued his weeklong critique of Rod Smith's record on labor issues. Today's statement: "In 2001 and then again in 2002, Smith voted to eliminate the Florida Department of Labor and Employment Security."

Davis is hoping to secure the endorsement of the state's second-largest union, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, which meets Saturday in Orlando.

But Smith fired back, accusing the Tampa Congressman of twisting the facts in a "desperate attack campaign." It goes on: "The fact is that the Department of Labor was dismantled in the 2000 legislative session (SB 2050) - before Rod Smith was elected to the Senate. In 2001 and 2002, the few remaining units were absorbed into other agencies - an administrative move necessary to ensure their sustainability."

I cry at night when I realize Davis was partially responsible for my state's political prowess during a large part of my life.

    Honestly, what the heck?
I mean, this attack was about as well thought out as the series finale to Twin Peaks. The AFLCIO loves Smith, and AFSCME loves him too. This anti-labor crap isn't fooling anybody.

    Go Rod!

I love facts, don't you?... they always trump political rhetoric. Davis is indeed hearing the footsteps and reacting as anticipated. It’s very Bush-esque… attack those who are gaining simply by telling the truth, and doing a better job connecting with the people.

Rod is bringing those… apathetic, sick of the wishy-washy politicos, tired of the “Can’t we all just get along” BS… Democrats out of their homes. They’re excited again because Rod gives them something to be excited about. He knows the difference between holding office and running for office. Holding office… you must check you party badge at the door in order to serve the good of the whole – Running for office in a two-Party system… you’re either a R or a D, and you better be damn proud of it if you want the vote.

    Go Rod!

    What a limp wristed attack.

Someone in the Davis camp is going to lose their job when this thing backfires and AFSCME goes with a lone endorsement for Smith.

And it will all be because a desperate, frantic, and disheviled, Davis started throwing baseless bombs and half-truths around about a Senator who has gone to bat more times for labor than any other elected official in recent history.

Good luck to the Davis team, after Sept. 5th I don't think there will be any room for you on the bandwagon.

Jim Davis has indeed become desperate given his recent essentially meaningless attacks on Rod Smith.

In other words, the more truthful and honest between them is clearly Rod Smith.

    Shame on Jim Davis.

Desperate people do desperate things, and the Davis campaign appears to be panicking. Wonder if the AFL-CIO and FEA are wishing for a revote.

    Go Rod!!!

    It's like quicksand for Davis.

The more he flails around, the deeper he sinks.

    Cue the flameout...and ACTION!!!

    Umpa..lumpa...dumpa..dee.doo

I have a little riddle for you:

What do Jim Davis and Betty Castor have in common?

Too bad that Jim Davis and his supporters do not see the obvious outcome approaching. If they did, Davis would join Rod Smith and be on the Democratic ticket as Lt. Governor, which would stop wasting scarce resources. A team of Smith and Davis would assure election of two good Democrats in November, against either of the two warring Republican candidates.

    minnicklaw,

Damn good post. Regardless of who comes out of the Primary… I hope they join forces; it will be a powerful ‘D’ ticket.
