Divorced Candidates

If you want Florida’s next governor to have no messy divorce or short-lived marriage in his past, your pickings are slim. Of the four major candidates for governor, only Democratic U.S. Rep. Jim Davis of Tampa has never been divorced. And while failed marriages are hardly unusual in this era of baby boomer politicians, most of Florida’s gubernatorial candidates face sticky personal questions about their prior marriages:

***Republican Chief Financial Officer Tom Gallagher, 62, campaigning as the most socially conservative, family-values candidate, this week acknowledged committing adultery in his first marriage after court documents from his divorce 27 years ago were revealed.
***Democratic state Sen. Rod Smith, 56, in every campaign he’s run, has had to explain why courts in the late 1980s ordered him to pay nearly $18,000 in unpaid child support and found him in contempt for being $92 short on one child support check.
***Republican Attorney General Charlie Crist, 49, was forced to deny he’s gay, after a woman at a public forum pointedly asked him about his six-month marriage in 1979.

In an era when the Republican Party has dominated Florida politics in part by selling its version of family values, how much might these messy marriages matter at the ballot box? Story is here.

Yes, Monica kept the dress and her affair with Bubba gave the press a free pass to print uncorroborated, but sensational gossip. rumor and innuendo. The standard is no longer is the information both reliable and relevent. The stand is will it sell newspapers. Unfortunately the answer as always is yes when the subjec is sex.

Given this environment, does anyone now doubt why so many qualified private citizens say no to running for public office?

I don't know whether to tip my hat to TG, CC et al for their fortitide in putting up with this vicious sh*t or question their sanity.

I'll be surprised if this storyline has any traction. It's usually only the Democrats who face this kind of scrutiny in today's media. Read this story from The Washington Monthly:

    http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/features/2006/0607.benen.html

The Clinton's marriage gets dissected above the fold in the New York Times, yet the lapdog press doesn't bother to give the same attention to the adulterous and hypocritical Republicans.

The only thing more disgusting is the GOP base that is too sanctimonious/stupid/power-hungry to hold their own politicians to any kind of standard.

That blip about Charlie is yet another example of the worst-kind of journalism. Because some lunatic asks Charlie if he is gay, you now get to repeat it in the paper?

Personal history is relevant only to the extent that it tells us what kind of public official a candidate would make, what he stands for, and whether he's worthy of the public trust.Anything beyond that is voyeuerism worthy of the Enquirer but not a major paper with a history of ethical journalism.

It's ironic that the same folks who express the greatest concerns over personal privacy in matters of national security are the first to violate that privacy in the name of selling newspapers. Next thing you know, Joni will be digging in people's garbage cans.

I think you are way off base. There has been more than just one simple question from a "lunatic", to fuel the rumors about Charlie's sexuality. I would call it a "substatiated rumor", I know that's an oxymoron, but you get my point. There has been more than enough conjecture to give that rumor legs. If there was absolutely no truth to it whatsoever, it would have died a long time ago, but this "rumor" has persisted for literally years.

I think the purpose of the Times article was meant to accomplish two things: keep the Gallagher issue in the paper for another day and totally gloss over the Crist divorce issue (we argued, ex wife unavailable for comment). Has the Times pursued Crist's divorce with the same passion? Perhaps the Tribune is working on a similar story? Doubtful. We know who the two homer newspapers are backing in this race.

You guys (now I'm a Crist supporter, so I get to say 'you' instead of 'we')are incapable of turning the campaign around, and so resorting to the same old rumor mill buzz will continue to be ineffective and of no use whatsoever to catching up to Crist.

Try exercising a little faith. Brett Doster and David Johnson are experienced deckhands my friend. They know what they're doing.

Lot's of negative things will be said and printed about each of the candidates (even Mr. Milktoast himself) Davis. That's just part of the American political landscape these days.

This is just a speedbump along the Daytona 500 campaign trail. Nothing to get despondent over.

Gallagher's got about $6 mill to spend over the summer and hasn't even rolled out his ad campaign yet.

Agree with Tampabryan on this one. The Charlie rumor has been circulating for years and Charlie refuses to candidly discuss the issue. His only defense was a lame "no I'm not gay" to a question raised last year at the St. Pete Tiger Bay club.

Of course that would be so obviuos to the electrate, no one would buy that conversion. Poor CC- forever judged as gay, and the irony- this is coming from the "Judge Not Crowd", and that they embrace the one who resembles Clinton the most...LOL- who would have ever thought?

I track your point, and well put indeed. But I would submit that the issue stems from an overall mistrust of leadership. Sort of this… “You’ve lied to me so often, why should I believe anything you say”, kind of attitude. It’s quite sad really, that we’ve allowed our Nation’s most important process, to become so bastardized by marketing consultants… rather than embracing the honor of public service.

Top that off with a strong desire to expose the hypocrisy, and voila… there you have it, the political “culture of the 21st century”

From 2-million and a houseboat in California, to 90K worth of “Green” ice cream in Louisiana. As I’ve stated many time before… the only “bi-partisan” actions going on within our government these days is corruption.

It’s kind of like the parents that allow their 14-year old daughter to dress and make-up like a prostitute… then are shocked when she comes home pregnant.

It’s time to clean house across the board. I plan to do my part.

Are you really that stupid? Yeah, TG has committed some major indiscretions, but because he is married now the right-wing has "forgiven all". Let me ask you this.... Don't you think, in this day and age, that any Republican politician has a better chance of winning a primary if he is considered a "family man" and kisses the right-wings asses? Charlie is a good looking guy, suave and considered a good catch by most any single woman out there. My guess is that if Charlie really wanted to be married, he would be. The right-wing has jumped on board with TG and they are there to stay because of his "pro-family" stance. The only reason that CC is ahead is because TG is a horrible candidate and normal thinking people, who care about issues other than whether someone is married, gay, etc have jumped on board with CC, thereby splitting the Republican party. Were TG a halfway decent candidate on just about any other issue, he would be ahead. What I am saying about Charlie is not old news in any other vain than that the rumor has been circulating for years. It's not like it was out there, went away and then some cook brought it up again years later. It has been consistent. But, as a result of the points I made above, CC will probably win the primary and the right-wing will simply stay home in November, rather than help elect someone who may or may not be gay. They aren't going to take any chances. Not that any of this matters to me personally, I actually think it would be hilarious if Charlie got elected and then came busting out of the closet. Whatever the case, this issue is not going to go away for him until he addresses it better than a simple "I'm not gay".

I used to think you simply failed to see the inconsistencies in your various statements, but now I suspect they'r quite intentional.

From your 11:18 a.m. response to someone or other:

"The campaign hasn't even gotten started yet. More will happen in the next two months than has happened in the past year."

Does it not concern you that your candidate's campaign "hasn't even gotten started yet" with just 80-something days until the election? Even Rod Smith's quixotic effort is making more headway than is your champion.

    And this pearl:

"The Charlie rumor has been circulating for years and Charlie refuses to candidly discuss the issue. His only defense was a lame "no I'm not gay" to a question raised last year at the St. Pete Tiger Bay club."

How do you figure he refuses to discuss it candidly, considering that when he was asked directly, he answered directly? And how is a direct answer a "lame" answer? He didn't even try to hide behind the old "that question isn't worth answering." He answered it.

The fact that you don't like the answer he gave doesn't mean he didn't give a direct answer. To date no one has produced a shred of evidence to support this juvenile, purile rumor. Not one shred. The fact that the Gallagher people refuse to accept Crist's direct answer and continue to spread unfounded rumors says far, far more about them than it does about Charlie Crist.

Please stop. You're embarrassing the rest of us Crist supporters. It seems you've totally confused yourself into somehow thinking Gallagher engaged in a second bit of adultery involving roommates. The original article said "Louise said she met Gallagher while she was a University of Miami student and he dated her roommate." In other words, a single guy (Gallagher) dated a single girl (the roommate) but then met and decided he'd rather date that girl's roommate (Louise, later his first wife).

That's not adultery, it's more like typical college-student behavior. What he did later ... now THAT'S adultery ...
