Gallagher's Personal Past
The disclosure by Gallagher, Florida’s Chief Financial Officer, came just days after a Florida newspaper showed his campaign staff 24 pages of court documents from his 1979 divorce from his first wife, Ann Louise Gallagher.

Given the false sexual innuendos coming from the Gallagher camp regarding CC, it is understandable that some believe that TG put his own past in play.
I don't buy it. Whatever TG, or George Bush for that matter, did or smoked 25 years ago in private should stay quietly buried. It is way remote in time and has no bearing on the man that TG has become today.
It does, however, appear that TG is only digging his grave further with the press, who don't like him anyway.
Breaking the story first may be ok from a damage control perspective, but it also burned the reporter, who provided the documents and asked for comment before going with the story. This breaks the unwritten rule.
TG better hope that this reporter wasn't holding something big back as is so often the case. When a reporter wants to nail someone, they generally let the news drip out in several stories. If this story was only intended as part 1, then part 2 is going to be nasty.

And, while we're talking about finding Jesus on this board, let's not forget what he said in Matthew about treating the lowest just like you would treat Him. Also, take note of this from the Sermon on the Mount:
Judge not, that ye be not judged. [7:1]
For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged:

And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye,

Or how wilt thou say to thy brother,
Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye;
and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye? [4]
Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye;
and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye. [5]

david, and every other Gallagher hanger onner, your man handled this about as poorly as it could be handled, which is the best example to-date of why the Romper Room Kids have no idea what they are doing.
WHY in the world, would Gallagher take this on????!!!!!
THE standard response, given the circumstances, is to become "righteously indignant", loudly and frequently blame your opponent for digging up dirt and dirty campaigning, 11th commandmenrt, etc., whether they are responsible or not, and keep saying it loudly and frequently.
"my opponent is trying to make an issue of a mistake made over 30 years ago, and he should be ashamed of himself".
Instead, the consultants tell Tom to self-disclose!!!!!!!
Now it is solidly Tom's issue, and his alone.

One would assume that the inferred sins of CC might be something the TG people would want to be open, and it would be more damaging to CC.

Zenator....
I have read some of your previous postings, so, do you really believe the Gallagher people are that smart? You are suggesting that they are two steps ahead of everyone including the opposition.
I submit the theory that the Gallagher campaign is in crises mode, approaching "bunker mentality". They knew a story was going to run in the Tampa Trib, so a decision was made to self disclose in order to tell the story "their way", instead of letting the Trib tell the story.
"How" they told their story, is equally bizarre with the whole "Tom is a changed man" spin.
Duh!, of course he's a changed man. It was 28 years ago, he's married now, and 28 years ago is a non-event.
I maintain that it was handled so poorly, without even a hint of turn about. The Gallagher campaign, after accusing Crist of digging the stuff up, should have then insisted the Trib or the press corps ask the following to each state-wide candidate, Deomcrat and Republican, then print the results:
1. Have you ever cheated on your spouse?;
2. Have you ever smoked marijuana?;
3. Have you ever tried cocaine?.
If they lie, someone will out them ala Gary Hart.
It proves my point, that the campaign staff and consultants have no idea how to get out of the mess their in, and Tom is so frozen in the headlights at this point, that he is afraid to fire them all and get some fresh brain power.
As to your last point, it may well be that more stuff comes out on Tom. We all know there is plenty more. The issue has and will continue to be, how the Romper Room Kids handle it, or in their case, mishandle it.

With that being said, the Tribune was very careful in their article this morning to say these documents were given to them, they didn't pursue them. Hmmm, now lets see -- WHO benefits from those documents being out there?

Just one further thought. Aren't these all self-inflicted wounds? First, TG posts his tax returns on his campaign web site, which leads the press to review them and write about day trading etc. Next, TG makes a big deal about the Broward BREC indorsement of CC by demanding a revote, which TG then loses, which leads the press to write a series of stories. Next, TG puts his prior life in play, which leads the press to pen the latest stories.
No need for CC to get involved in the fray, when TG is so busy shooting himself. Meanwhile, it is my understanding that CC has quietly gone up with TV buys in Palm Beach County, which began running this week.

Better for Gallagher to "spill the beans" now then wait until later in the campaign.
While the news could be somewhat damaging, if you look at past history and some former Presidents and politicians, it didn't really seem to affect them too much (JFK, Ted Kennedy, Clinton, George W. Bush).
Even the beloved Jeb Bush was hounded about rumors concerning extra-marital affairs and drug use amongst his children (if not Jeb himself).
It might even win some votes. It does make Tom Gallagher "normal". What people are questioning about Charlie Crist is his "abnormal" lifestyle but more on that later.
I would venture to say probably 75% of the bloggers on this page have gone through a messy divorce, smoked marijuana, tried cocaine, cheated on their spouse, etc.
If we discounted every politician, doctor, lawyer, teacher, police officer, etc. who ever did any of these things, we wouldn't have anyone left in society to assume those jobs.
All that comes with "coming of age". The indiscretions of our immature youth. At least Gallagher admitted it and didn't use some lame excuse like "I never inhaled".
David raises some valid points. Will Charlie Crist release the contents of his three month marriage? And if not, why and what is he hiding from the voters?
As I've said before, Gallagher's life is an open book. Everyone who has worked in Tallahasee knows about Tom's indiscretions. It's not a big deal to us.
Everyone who has worked in Tallahassee knows that Charlie Crist is gay. That's why the Crist camp wants the issue to go away and acts indignantly when the issue is raised.
Personally, I'd rather have a guy who had an extra-marital affair and tried a little weed then a guy who's gay and has tried a little weed.

Are you implying that 75% on this blog have done all those combined things like TG? Or singular things?
I find the comparison to Clinton and TG rather humourous to me- I mean...I have never done the aforemention crimes, but I have never been a president or run for Gov. I guess to you, that must be in order to run for public office.
How old was TG during this "coming of age" ritual you speak of? I don't think he was in his 20s-
How can you say that TG is an open book? This only came out b/c of a newspaper-? it appears more like damage control then "coming to Jesus" but what do I know-
You drop the repeated referance " we in tallahasse"- this makes me want to confirm my original thought- this was not a explosive hit piece, but a controlled release by the HOLY people of TG to get reporters to release garbage on Crist.

Note your own final comment/threat about delaying until "when it hurts the most." If CC were orchestrating these leaks, one would expect the information to be leaked just prior to the primary, not many months before when the effect would be minimized.
This makes me suspect that the day trading stuff was probably the independent work of the press. You have a point with the ethics complaints. BREC was a disaster of TG's own making. The latest stuff cuts both ways. CC, also a divorced man who admittedly smoked pot, has no more interest than TG in drawing attention to these issues. Note CC's own immediate "I too used to smoke pot" press release. Being down 20-30 points in the polls is more than enough drag on TG's fund raising.
TG is still way down on dollars, unless he had a record-breaking quarter and CC's fund raising stalled badly, which weems very unlikely given the polls. CC was up by about $2.7 million at the end of the last quarter. He then went up on TV in 3 markets (Tampa, Orlando and Jacksonville). I don't know his points buy or the individual market cost, but suspect that the total cost was in the $100k per week range. C has now added Palm Beach. All in that equates to about $600k, plus or minus $100k, for all of June. This means that CC still has about $2 million more than TG before this quarter's results are tallied.
Bucs fan:
Read today's Tampa Tribune. As suggested, the reporter was holding a lot back and it was a bad idea for TG to burn the reporter and break the news himself. Now, we hear from the(obviously still bitter) ex-wife making impossible to disprove claims of blind ambition and cocaine. Ordinarily, I doubt that an editor would allow such irresponsible gossip, with no independent corroboration, to go to print, unless, of course, the paper was really teed off by TG's actions of yesterday.

By the way, the Tampa Tribune must be REALLY PISSED at your guy. What a hatchet job. Apparently, it has now posted the sound track of the reporter's interview with TG. I used to live down the street from Gallagher from 1982-84 in Coconut Grove. None of the neighbors had a very high opinion of him. Not because of his divorce, but because of the way he neglected his sheepdog. Gallagher was never home. The dog was left out in the yard for hours and hours uncared for. It’s coat was filthy, matted and full of burrs. The poor thing was thirsty and hungry. It would dig out of the yard under the fence and roam the neighborhood looking for handouts. We often fed the dog. Once, during his 1982 campaign, I took one of his newspaper ads which read “Vote for Gallagher, the man who gets things done.” I tore it out of the paper, folded it up and stuck it under his dog’s collar with the message “I wonder if your dog thinks you are the ‘man who gets things done.’
Don’t think much of the man. Didn’t then, don’ now.

David,
When you speak of your younger days you must provide some perspective here. How old are you? You must not be very old, because when you refer to your younger days, I doubt that you are referring to your mid thirties, and I doubt that you were elected and entrusted with the public vote. TG was in Tallahassee to do the the work of the people and he was advancing his own personal agenda: drugs and sex!
I feel for the elected officials that endorsed him. I expect that there will be some house and senate members recinding their support, as many voters may question their judgement in supporting this derelict.
It is so very obvious that TG was seduced by this lifestyle. His wife of many years said that his ego and the appeal of the this lifetyle, surrounded by Tallahassee groupies and stroked by the general population of lobbyists and staff was his desire, and he was treated like royalty. Funny that he had been coveting the status of his neighbor, a state representative.
Add a 'thou shalt not' and, wait, isn't that the ninth commandment?
Yet another reason why he can say that he turned his life around!!!
Hallelujah!

Many people on here say who cares, it was 27 years ago. If it was only 27 years ago then I would agree. But what will begin to come out now is the real TG. After his divorce, TG went back to the Legislature and was proud to be called a "party boy" and he lived up to it. He slept with everything he could in Tallahassee throughout the 80's and most of the 90's. He didn’t stop screwing everything he could, while getting plastered in the process with lobbyist picking up the tab, until 98. That was only 8 years ago. Is that relevant? Does it show a pattern to the vast majority of his adult life? Did he ask for it when he tried to reinvent himself as Christian right winger? Yes. Yes. Yes. If you know the story of St Augustine then you know that God can change mans hearts. St Augustine loved to chase women for almost half his life before he found God. In the Confessions of St. Augustine there is a passage where he prayed "oh Lord grant me chastity, just not quite yet." He did eventually turn from his old life and follow God. He became a pillar of the early Church. But he did not seek political power so the truthfulness of his conversion was not questioned. His works spoke for themself. TG might too have had an honest conversion but it seems as if he is using it to attain political power. Perhaps TG should follow the example of Augustine: forsake political power and dedicate your life to winning converts to Christ.

The campaign's latest "father's day" message, with the same old tired rhetoric was the straw that broke the back for me.
If you care, which I hope you have better things to do, you could see my post on "daddy Tom" 6/18/06 (1:50 pm)where I have finally made the decision to stop supporting Tom, and why, and I am now a Crist supporter.
My decision was long time developing and was made prior to Monday's revelations about Tom's past.
It may be easier for you to merely scroll back up, to, oh say 50 or 60 posts ago to 10:15 pm 6/19 and 8:52 am 6/20 to understand why I think if Tom can't handle a crisis within his own campaign, how in the world is he going to recognize one of his Agency Secretaries, or staff when they are blowing it.
Listening to him on the taped interview in fact confirmed for me my decision to support Crist. My sadness was listening to someone , who in my opinion has become a shell of his former self.

The obvious corollary to your argument and the position you seem to be espousing, is that only the carnal unregenerate men/women should be elected to govern/rule. That would be sort of like, "the blind leading the blind" wouldn't it?
One of the highest Christian callings in life is political "power" and it is a ministry to protect and preserve the society. Government was established by God and He assures when the "righteous" rule the people prosper and are safe.
Of course, that requires full protection for freedom of religion, not freedom from religion. Our nation's religous freedom was a Christian idea and the first time true freedom of religion had ever been made part of a nation's law. Preserving our Freedom of Religion is a major battle today!
Quit telling Christians to "Go to the back of the bus"!

You missed the point of my post. I am a Christian and have been one for 23 years. If Dan Webster was running for Governor then he would have my utmost respect and support. Webster has proven himself though the works of his life to be a Christian leader whom I am proud to show as an example to my children of a Christian leader with honor, dignity and respect. Because TG has made his sudden conversion the main topic of his campaign, it seems as if he decided in 98 that in order to get elected Governor by the GOP he had to remake himself into a right wing, family man, born again Christian. I hope he did have a true conversion experience, but many people think it all appears staged. When politician like TG make such huge sudden shifts in their religious beliefs and then make huge moves across the political spectrum as well, it hurts Christians everywhere and the message of Christ that is preached. If TG had found Christ in 80 or 85 and had changed his ways, stopped sleeping with everything he could and then 20 years of works were there to show the change, then we would not be having this conversation today. If you were to tell me Webster smoked pot and had an affair in 79 (which he didn’t) then I would agree it is not relevant. Webster has a reputation and a life’s work to back it up. But in the case of TG we are not talking about 79, we are talking about 98. The year of TG’s great awakening. Give me true Christian leaders such as Webster and I will support them. TG will not be elected Governor yet again. He is 64. Forsake political power and prove the detractors wrong. Leave the mantle of Christian leadership to those with a life’s work to back it up. It is time to tend the vineyards TG.

Publius,
Who are you supporting for Governor?
I did not miss your point. I think you are just trying to backpeddle on what you said and meant.
Webster is not running for Governor. The other alternative in the Republican camp is Crist.
As a Christian you have to decide who to vote for and whether or not you believe Gallagher has "turned over a new leaf," but don't undervalue the regeneration power of God! Your claim to be a Christian while using that logic in your previous posts is not convincing.
I am not criticizing your skepticism about Gallagher (we all have to decide that issue)but I am criticizing your assault on Christians as I read it. example: You said, "dedicate your life to winning converts" and "tend the vineyards." I read that as, "Christians to the back of the bus."

Terminator- I know for a fact that the girlfriend Charlie has is no prop, she is the head of a Bank in St. Pete, not just some ditsy blond. Your boy Gallagher should have found god in the 80's instead of 98'. My question to you is this: When your down by 25 points in the polls, down by over a couple million in fundraising, getting hammered by every reporter in the state for banging Leg.aids on the hood of his Benz, and drug abuse while in his late 20's and 30's, how can he survive? Throw in the Towl Tommy, cause your done-

And why the attorney for the girlfriend wouldn't let her repond in court when asked??..hey Maybe the St. Pete Times or Tampa Tribune can tell us who paid for the girfriends attorney since he is so cozy cozy with Gallagher....also note the girlfriend met Gllagher when HE WAS DATING HER ROOMMATE!!!!..wonder what the other roommate girlfriend has to say about Gallagher...

Or do you just enjoy trashing others, whom you likely have never met and certainly don't know.

Unfortunately the anwer is YES to first question and NO to second.
Gallagher does just fine being his own worst enemy. Unless your view is that someone is controlling Gallagher's mind and making him do things aginst his will such as..commit Adultry, Day Trade, hire Employees fro Private actvities with Public Vehicles, Get Illegal Contributions..this list is endless :)..in which case he should be in a padded room to protect him from himself and from us :).
