From the Davis campaign today: "TAMPA – Lacing up the boots given to him by Walkin’ Lawton Chiles’s wife, Rhea, at the Florida Democratic Party Conference last December, candidate for governor and Democratic frontrunner Jim Davis was joined in Tampa today by more than 50 dedicated supporters who participated in the first “Door-to-Door with Davis” event of his campaign for governor. Davis and his wife, Peggy, and the band of supporters walked through communities in West and South Tampa to talk with their neighbors about Davis’s long record of public service and his vision for using the office of governor to Keep Florida’s Promise....
“When I ran for the state legislature in 1988, Peggy and I knew our grassroots campaign was making a difference when a man answered his door and told me that he was supporting my campaign and would vote for me on Election Day – but only if we stopped coming to his door to ask for his vote,” said Davis. “Now, I am running for governor, and together, we’re building an army of supporters in every community in Florida to talk about the issues facing the future of this state and my vision for Keeping Florida’s Promise.”

On second thought, I guess he has to explain to his constituents why he has missed so many votes, leaving them with out a voice in Congress…

sfldem,
At least he still lives in his hometown and is not pretending to be a resident of south Florida.

tony,
maybe Jim ought to get down to South Florida a little more often.
On the other hand...nevermind.
Let him keep executing his plan the way he has been for 18 months now.
It seems to be working great...
For ROD!

Nice to see Jim getting to know voters instead of scraping up every last labor endorsement. Apparently Rod didnt get the memo that some voters consider more than union cred. A candidate can't go wrong spending time in his own neighborhood.

I was collecting petitions all day in South Tampa for a couple of other proud Florida Democrats ... Mary Mulhern for County Commission and Charlie Justice for FL Senate Dist 16 ... had a lot of south Tampians ask me about my RodSqad sticker .... I was proud to tell them all about his vision for ALL Floridians, his personal knowledge of the working hard philosphy of most Floridians, how he was proud to have had to go to community college before he could afford to go to the university, then was urged to go on to law school.
Rod Smith knows personally what so many of us are experiencing .... budgeting our family checkbooks and saving for things ion our "wish list"
Rod Smith's charisma and his driving desire for a better Florida for all Floridians is what is driving his campaign. Rod Smith is the Democratic candidate that all Republicans fear - he takes no crap off anyone in his fight for ALL Floridians.

Here's that memo you were looking for
Memorandom
To: Rep. Jim Davis
From: Your Consitituents
We, the voters in your district, elected you to represent us in Congress. We would appreciate it if you actually showed up to do that. After all, you are getting paid to do so.
From here on out, the practice of showing up for work shall be considered mandatory. We understand that, after all, it is a government job. But we expect full-time work, for full-time pay.
Consider this your last warning.
Disciplinary action shall be enforced at the ballot box in September.
Sincerely,
Your Bosses "The Taxpayers"

I would LOVE to see you guys find A SINGLE important vote that was within a single vote of either passing or failing that Jim has missed (other than the Patriot Act Re-Authorization which has been said and done and very few democrats will shed any tears about the Patriot Act almost not getting re-authorized because of Jim's absence).
What most people don't understand is that 90+% of the votes in Congress pass by OVERWHELMING margins and I'd rather Jim be campaigning for the future of Florida than casting an entirely symbolic vote.

Davis the "frontrunner" needs to canvass his hometown? Wow. I guess he hasn't done any more work in the district than he has in Washington. And anybody notice that he's been running for Governor for 1 1/2 years -- and his wife just changed her registration to Democrat. It took 18 months to earn her vote? Now that's momentum.

FYI: My brother was friends with Peggy at Plant High School. He has nothing but praise for her. He has met Jim and considers him a man of intregity, which I will not argue against.

South Florida Democrat:
"On second thought, I guess he has to explain to his constituents why he has missed so many votes, leaving them with out a voice in Congress…"
.......
As long as the votes are not close and thus his vote would make a difference, then this is a non-issue, a faux issue, a silly issue.

I don't know, I'd kinda like to know my congressman shows up to work every day. I mean, I go even when I don't want to, because it's my job and my responsibility.

When you're not in Washington for all those votes, you're also passing up chances to work with your colleagues to pass your own bills, to win funding for your district, or have any kind of significant influence.
Maybe all those missed votes helped contribute to a 419 ranking. Or maybe Davis feels his stuff has a better chance of passing if he's not there.
At 11:48 PM, June 18, 2006, Capemont said…
Every day in Washington spent casting votes on legislation that will pass or fail by epic margins regardless, is time that CAN'T be spent in one's district pushing constituent services.
The fact that Davis has consistently won elections in electorally divided Tampa with 80+% of the vote, is probably due in part to this fact.

The question you are all missing is...why is this his first walking event? Crist, Gallagher, and Smith have been walking precincts for months, and Davis is having his first made for media walk? Time to get going Jim...

Capemont,
So you say "What most people don't understand is that 90+% of the votes in Congress pass by OVERWHELMING margins ..."
So Jim Davis is 90% irrelevent in Congress? I think I knew this already. So I guess we can safely ignore his rating as the least effective and most absent Florida Congressman. After all, he just doesn't matter anyway!
