'Phedre' opens Capitol Theatre series

On a sun-blasted Saturday afternoon, a crowd of about 150 turned out for a screening of Racine's sun-blasted Greek tragedy, Phedre, in a filmed production by Great Britain's National Theatre, shown at the old Capitol Theatre in downtown Clearwater.

Robert Freedman, president of  Ruth Eckerd Hall, which presented the screening, said he was happy with the attendance for the Saturday matinee and the Friday performance, which drew about 100. The audience got the treat of seeing  Helen Mirren in the title role of the queen of Athens, whose forbidden lust for her stepson provoked a curse that led to carnage in the court.

Upcoming National Theatre productions to be seen at the Capitol will include Shakespeare's All's Well That Ends Well; Nation, adapted by Mark Ravenhill from a novel for young people by Terry Pratchett; and The Habit of Art by Alan Bennett.
