Think you've been seeing pink, like, everywhere you go? Pink ribbons, pink ties, pink dresses, pink signs. Don't worry, it's not your imagination. It's Breast Cancer Awareness Month!
For much of my life, October would come and go with little fanfare. I've always known cancer to be a horrible thing. It kills thousands every year. According to the American Cancer Society, one in eight women will contract breast cancer in her lifetime -- that's 225,000 women annually. Of those one in 36 will die.
A little more than a month ago, someone dear to me became that one.
Her name was Penny. She was a mentor, teacher, mother, friend. She was one of the toughest women I'd ever met, and she died fighting this disease. This October, as I made my first-ever donation to cancer research, I think of her.
If your hearts (and wallets) are similarly in the right place this month, check out these fabulous fuchsia items for the cure. Some are the more expensive side (well beyond the Deal Diva standard), but hey, "it's for a good cause," sounds like a pretty great excuse to me.
Touchdown for tatas It's football season. Get geared while raising awareness about life-saving screenings with the National Football League's his and her
Crucial Catch collection. Some items are subtle, with a small pink ribbon embroidered on the side of an otherwise typical jersey. Others go all out. I say to win the game against cancer, you gotta go big or go home.
Give cancer the boot
ShoeDazzle is a website that will curate shoes to your fashion tastes based on a look-and-click quiz. This month, the site is offering members a chance to shop pink with items that will yield a 10 percent donation to the non-profit
Bright Pink.
Rev up for research Hitting that mid-day brick wall? Need a boost? If you buy 5-Hour Energy's new
Pink Lemonade shot anytime between now and the end of the year, five cents per bottle will be donated to the
Avon Breast Cancer Crusade. The company has pledged a minimum of $75,000 to the cause.
Giuliana gets it Giuliana Rancic, E! News anchor, is a breast cancer survivor. She teamed up this year with
LOFT to create a collection of breast cancer-centric styles. The items start at $34.50. Each full-price purchase will offer a 25 percent donation to the
Breast Cancer Research Fund. Or, if you buy a LOFT Cares Card ($25), 90 percent of that will go toward breast cancer research.
Shop for survivors The
Brobe, a robe with an internal bra that can hold ice packs and other medical gear for women in the throes of recovery, runs a hefty $139.99 price tag, but 10 percent of October online sales will be given to breast cancer research.
LAST BUT NOT LEAST: The smartest bra ever Ok, this is not exactly something you can buy. At least not yet. But put it down on your future Christmas list because according to preliminary trials, this device can indicate cancer up to six years before a tumor can be detected by traditional imaging. Crazy, huh? According to MedCity News, the company First Warning Systems created a sensor to place inside a bra that can measure "cell temperature changes created over time by new
blood vessel growth associated with developing tumors." It's believed a device like this could reduce the number of false positives and negatives associated with mammography.
